Happy Memorial Day!

China – U.S. trade (along with company specific restrictions related to Huawei Technologies) once again were the focus of the week.  Some significant volatility Monday (down) and Tuesday (up), with another strong downdraft Thursday highlighted the week’s action in markets.
“At the margin, the global trade situation is deteriorating, and that increases uncertainty,” Willie…

China – U.S. trade talk continued to dominate the week.   A heavy selloff Monday was followed by 3 up days, with Friday moderately down.
On Monday, Chinese officials announced retaliatory tariffs against the U.S., hitting $60 billion in annual exports to China with new or expanded duties that could reach 25%.
Then on Wednesday:
The Trump administration plans to delay a decision on instituting…

Trade deal worries between China and the U.S. dominated the headlines all week.   A large gap down Monday morning due to some Trump tweets was mostly fended off as buyers came in hot and heavy.   A significant selloff ensued Tuesday.   The rest of the week ended up choppy but without significant end of day moves up or down.

Trump’s tweet Sunday night was:
For 10 months, China has been paying…

Indexes fell Wednesday after traders were saddened the Federal Reserve was not prepared to inject another round of gasoline into markets via an interest rate hike, but rallied Friday after employment data came in at a solid level.  Aside from that, a ton of earnings hit.
In a unanimous vote, the Fed kept its benchmark interest rate in a range of 2.25% to 2.5%. Senior officials sounded more…

Another great week for the bulls as a rallies Tuesday and late Friday pushed markets back to the all time high levels!  Earnings “beats” (off lowered expectations) are helping out here:
More than a fifth of the S&P 500 constituents have reported results, with nearly 80% of those companies producing earnings results that topped analysts’ consensus estimates, compared with about 65% in the…

This past week was the definition of “consolidation” – a period of very little movement and volatility after a large move up to work off overbought conditions.  A slight gap up Tuesday was about it in terms of excitement for the week.  Bulls remain in full control.

We are in the midst of earnings season – it is not a great one but companies have lowered the bar enough that they will “beat”,…

It was generally a quiet week as not much progress or rumor on the “Chinese – U.S. trade deal” happened.  Four days of consolidation followed by a gap up Friday on strong bank earnings pre market (along with Disney news).  Market also got a lift Friday from trade data released by China that showed March exports rose 14.2% from a year earlier versus forecasts calling for a rise of 8.7% and after…

Another week of rallying on similar news we have been rallying on for the past 6 weeks or so now – mostly the Chinese – U.S. trade talks.
“Ninety percent of the deal is done, but the last 10% is the hardest part, it’s the trickiest part and it will require trade-offs on both sides,” said Myron Brilliant, executive vice president for international affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, adding…

A solid week for the bulls as the panic of the “inverted yield curve” subsided and bears went back to getting mostly spanked.  A big gap up Tuesday followed by a solid rally Friday provided most of the spark.  Optimism about the Chinese-U.S. trade talks seemed to be the contributor for much of the gains – it has been amazing how the market has rallied on that same news over and over.

Global…

It was looking like another week of Federal Reserve Kool Aid and crushing bears .. until Friday.  On the back of bad economic news out Europe, the yield curve inverted on the 3 month vs 10 year bond – before you fall asleep to that news, it is a quite important indicator for the economy (not necessarily the stock market… yet).   More on that in a bit.  As you can see the action in the bond…

A very good week for market bulls as the prior week’s selling was all reversed.  Last week we asked how many times can we rally on the same Federal Reserve juice.  It seems indefinitely.  Jerome Powell went on ’60 Minutes’ and talked dovish – that sparked a big rally Monday and it continued all week.  The only down day all week was Thursday when the progress on the U.S. – China trade deal…

The non stop rally of 2019 finally hit some road blocks this past week.  The utter glee of a potential China-U.S. trade deal wasn’t enough for the market to rally on the same old news for yet another week; it has essentially rallied on that news for nearly a month.  “Patience” still makes everyone happy – but a dismal employment report Friday, the European Central Bank talking about more…

A quiet week for the market, which is exactly what the bulls want – low volatility and little in the way of pullbacks as the indexes consolidate a few months of big gains.  Monday thru Thursday saw very little movement, and the week ended with a moderate rally Friday.  Powell testified to Congress and essentially whispered “patience” repeatedly and away we go – we’ve been in “Fed is on our…

The blistering start to 2019 continued this past week, as 3 days of consolidation led to a decent rally Friday.  The NASDAQ had been up 8 sessions in a row until a small retreat Thursday.  Volatility has fallen off dramatically and bears have been on the run for weeks on end as the Federal Reserve has no “patience” for them.   This is the 9th straight up week for the NASDAQ and Dow Jones (the…

The “V” shape bounce continues in unrelenting fashion as bulls are stampeding bears in 2019!  All due to a little “patience” from the Federal Reserve.  It is really quite breathtaking but we have seen it repeatedly the past decade as the Federal Reserve pours gas on the market.  Hopes for a deal with China also spurred the action upward.  Rallies (both with gap ups) on Tuesday and Friday…

A good week for the bulls once again as a very overbought market essentially went sideways to help work off some of those near term extreme conditions.  The S&P 500 stalled exactly at the 200 day moving average after a frantic rally the past month and a half.  It was generally a quiet week with lowered volatility as the word “patience” continues to have the investor class in a happy…

It is amazing how one word can change the whole trajectory of trillions of dollars worldwide.  PATIENCE.

After entering the week severely overbought, indexes sold off modestly Monday and were near flat Tuesday.  Then the Federal Reserve reiterated a very dovish stance – PATIENCE – and markets were back off to the races with sharp rallies Wednesday and Thursday.  A nice employment report Friday…

Despite a bout of selling Tuesday, this was a good week for stock market bulls.  Indexes entered the week extremely overbought and one day of selling followed by two modest gains Wednesday & Thursday helped work off some of that situation.  Then another solid rally happened Friday.   With the central bank back back onside and in rah rah mode, all issues that concern people seem to have…

After entering the week quite overbought, indexes took a small retreat Monday before hurling back upwards.  This is typical of the “V” shaped moves up after any significant selloff, we’ve seen most of the past decade and watching them unfurl is quite amazing actually.  Thought maybe this time would be “different” but not so much.  So two week’s ago we asked “Has the Fed solved all the market’s…
